Do I need Coaching or Counselling?
Coaching looks at where you are at today, and how to move you forward to where you really want to be. As a life coach, I am trained to help you see clearly where you currently are, help you identify your goals and move you forward to them. My job is to not give you advice or tell you what to do, but I am there to help you discover what is currently stopping you from moving forward and reaching your goals. Coaching is much more action orientated!
In counselling, we dig a little deeper into the past. I create a safe and supportive space for you to explore who you are and help you identify and solve problems. Simply said, I am your support system to help you gain clarity and coping mechanisms for your present self. Counselling will help you regulate your emotions and is coping orientated!
If you are still unsure whether you need Coaching or Counselling, do not worry, that is something we can discuss in our first session, it is not a decision that needs to be made now! In fact, I've had clients who finished their counselling sessions and decided they wanted some coaching after! I also offer free 15 minute phone calls and can clarify any questions needed!
Why is mental health important? What can you do for me?
Mental health affects our quality of life. It affects how we think, how we feel, and how we act on a daily basis. From childhood to adolescence, and adulthood, mental health is crucial at every stage of life. It affects our relationships, it affects our work and career, and it affects our overall health and well-being. If you are ever feeling stuck, confused, or lost, chances are you are not alone in that. We have problems AND we have resources to help us in that. Instead of feeling stuck in our feelings, thoughts and emotions, we can allow it to flow through us instead- I can give you the tools and skills for that!
That being said, I'm not here to diagnose. I have and will continue to expand on the skills needed to help someone get through an emotionally difficult time, without attaching a label to my client. I find it powerful, I find it effective and I am confident in how I choose to practice. If providing a clinical diagnosis or a medical intervention is something you wish to explore, I can absolutely aid you with referrals, and I am more than capable to guide you through every day life post-diagnosis, affordably.
Who needs Coaching/Counselling?
There can be such a negative stigma associated with counselling and I'm not just saying this because I am in the mental health field, but I TRULY TRULY believe everyone can use coaching/counselling. Reality is, every person struggles with life problems, and ANYONE can benefit from coaching and counselling! You do not need to be in a crisis to seek help! It is not always realistic for a friend or family to be a listening ear without having judgement, opinions, or biases. And, they may not have the skills necessary to help you discover deeper, underlying issues.
It is normal to experience sadness, depression, loneliness, worry, anxiety, conflict, stress and anger. Seeking support doesn't mean you are weak, it means you have the courage and willingness to better your life.
All in all, counselling is for people who want to experience a peace of mind.
Counselling is for people who want to experience more joy and less worry in their lives.
Counselling is for people who want to be able to control and regulate their emotions.
Counselling is for people who want greater self-awareness.
Counselling is for people who want to understand themselves in greater depth.
Counselling is for people who want someone to talk to at a greater depth.
Counselling is a healing process and beneficial for everyone.
What should I expect in my first session?
In your first session, you can get all the questions you have out of the way and get to know a little bit more about me, my purpose and intent for our sessions. We go through a confidentiality and liability waiver of paperwork, and address any questions or concerns you may have. If you have a clear presenting goal at our first session, great, if not, no worries at all. I have an intake form for every client. An intake form is simply a mini questionaire regarding your life and to ensure that we are the best fit for each other! If I find out the things you are seeking support for do not align with my expertise, I will happily refer you to another professional!
How many sessions will I need?
This is up to my client! You always have choice!
I have had clients complete 5 sessions and feel as if they have made enough progress, and I have also had clients who I've been seeing weekly for over a year and want to continue. You may start off with just 1 session, and you can end our sessions whenever you want. This is something I will go through in further detail during our first session when we sign some paperwork!
Is everything I tell you confidential?
Everything in our sessions is strictly confidential! Notes will always be locked up or shredded. Only exceptions are if you tell me you are in danger of harming yourself, you threaten to harm someone else, or in the unlikely event that our records are subpoenaed by a court of law. Other than that, I will never disclose your information. You and your information are safe with me!
